Car and Driver recently announced that General Motors has recalled 3,640,162 vehicles in the U.S. due to a large-scale airbag defect. The malfunction was discovered by a GM employee in May, who cited a collision involving a 2014 Silverado. A series of investigations followed, and as a result GM recalled over a dozen makes and models in August.
According to the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration, the faulty airbags may not deploy in a crash due to a defective sensor. The sensors have been found to randomly default into a diagnostic mode; causing the frontal airbags and seatbelt pretensions to not deploy. Dealerships will be reflashing the sensing diagnostic module at a later date, and replacing the module for any vehicles that have deployed their airbags. In additional, the all of the affected makes and models that were manufactured after August 24th have the updated modules installed.
