Automobile accidents occur frequently, and can be the result of a number of different situations. In order to be a proactive and safe driver, it is important to understand the common causes of car accidents and methods of prevention.
Common Cause: Rear-Enders
According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, rear-end collisions account for 29-percent of all automobile accidents. Drivers not looking at the road and/or engaging in tangential activities are cited as the most common causes of rear-end collisions.
Stay off of your cell phone while driving, and be extra attentive to your surroundings. Focus on the road and don’t speed.
Common Cause: Side-Impact Crashes
According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, side-impact crashes – also known as “T-bone” crashes – account for 27-perent of passenger vehicle occupant deaths in the U.S. in 2009. Side-impact crashes are acutely dangerous because the sides of vehicles have less space to absorb energy and shield passengers.
Have a firm understanding of driving rules and regulations and practice vigilance when driving. Be extra observant when approaching red lights and stop signs, and look both ways when you have the right of way.
Common Cause: Hydroplaning
Hydroplaning occurs when a vehicle drives over a pool of standing water and the tires are unable to scatter the water. As a result, a layer of water builds between the road surface and the wheels of the vehicle causing loss of traction and subsequently preventing a driver from having control over steering.
Drive slowly in the rain and avoid areas on the road where water accumulates. If your car begins to hydroplane, do not stomp the breaks – instead apply steady pressure to the breaks allowing the vehicle to slowly come to stop. In addition, inspect your tire treads frequently in order to identify if they are worn down.
